Why Visit

Sri Lanka's most visited national park and one of the best places in Asia to see a leopard in the wild, alongside elephants and abundant birdlife.

Sri Lanka's most storied wilderness, where dry scrub forest and ancient tanks shelter some of the island's most elusive wildlife.

History

Yala was designated a wildlife sanctuary in 1900, making it one of the earliest protected wildlife reserves anywhere in Asia, and was upgraded to full national park status in 1938 alongside Wilpattu. Under British colonial administration it initially served as a controlled hunting ground for game before conservation became its purpose. The park also holds much older human history: it contains ruins and reservoirs (tanks) built more than a thousand years ago under the Ruhuna kingdom, one of Sri Lanka's ancient regional kingdoms, from a time when this now-dry, thinly populated landscape supported organized agricultural settlements. The rock monastery of Sithulpawwa, within the park's boundaries, dates to the 2nd century BCE and remained an important pilgrimage site through the centuries, meaning Yala has functioned as both sanctuary and sacred landscape for a very long time before it became a wildlife destination. Today the park is divided into several blocks, only the first and most accessible of which sees the bulk of visitor traffic.
