Dense rainforest canopy in Sri Lanka's Sinharaja Forest Reserve

Wildlife & Nature

Sinharaja Rain Forest

The island's last major stretch of rainforest.

Why Visit

The best place on the island to see Sri Lanka's endemic birds and wildlife in genuine rainforest, not a managed park.

A UNESCO World Heritage rainforest and the largest remaining area of Sri Lanka's original lowland rainforest, dense with endemic species found nowhere else.

History

Sinharaja survives today largely because its steep, wet terrain made it harder to log and convert to plantation than much of Sri Lanka's wet-zone rainforest, which was cleared extensively for coffee, tea and rubber under colonial rule from the 19th century onward. Selective mechanised logging did take place here into the 1970s, removing valuable hardwood species, before mounting scientific and public pressure halted it. Recognising what remained as the largest surviving block of the island's original lowland rainforest — and one with an unusually high rate of endemism, including bird species found nowhere else on Earth — UNESCO designated Sinharaja a Biosphere Reserve in 1978 and a World Heritage Site in 1988, protections that have kept it largely intact since. Its name, meaning "Lion Kingdom" in Sinhala, ties into broader Sri Lankan founding legends involving a mythical lion ancestor, though the forest itself has no single documented historical event tied to that name.
