History

Pigeon Island takes its name from the rock pigeons (blue rock pigeons) that nest on it, and its two small islets — the larger of which holds the swimmable reef — were first given formal protection as a sanctuary in 1963. Recognition of the quality and accessibility of its coral reef led to it being upgraded to full national park status in 2003, making it one of only two marine national parks in Sri Lanka, alongside a stretch of coast near Rumassala. Its history as a formally protected area is relatively recent compared to the island's ancient monuments, but reflects a longer-standing local awareness of the reef's value as a fishing ground and, more recently, its ecological importance, including as a nursery area for young blacktip reef sharks.

Things to Do

  • Snorkel the shallow coral reef
  • Spot blacktip reef sharks
  • Combine with a Trincomalee or Nilaveli stay
