East Coast
Pasikuda Beach
A shallow, calm bay on the east coast.
Why Visit
Some of the calmest, most swimmable water on the island, a result of the bay's unusually shallow, gently sloping seabed.
A long, shallow bay on the east coast known for exceptionally calm, flat water well out from shore.
History
Pasikuda began attracting resort development in the 1980s on the strength of its unusually calm, shallow bay — a rare configuration on an island where most coastlines drop off more steeply — but that early growth was cut short almost immediately by the outbreak of civil war, which made the east coast largely inaccessible to tourism for the next two decades. The 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami caused further serious damage along this coastline. Rebuilding and substantial new resort investment resumed in the years after the war ended in 2009, and Pasikuda has since re-established itself as one of the east coast's main beach destinations, this time with the infrastructure its original 1980s developers never had the chance to build.
Things to Do
