Why Visit

The heart of Sri Lanka's tea country, with working estates and factories open to visitors within a short drive of town.

A former British hill station set among tea estates at over 1,800 metres, known for its cooler climate and colonial-era architecture.

History

Nuwara Eliya was developed by British colonists from the 1820s onward as a hill station retreat from the tropical heat of the lowlands, discovered and promoted after colonial officer John Davy and, more decisively, Governor Edward Barnes explored the area in the 1810s–20s and recognised its cool climate as ideal for a sanatorium town. Its architecture — timber-framed cottages, a golf course, a horse-racing track and buildings modelled on English country towns — still reflects that origin, earning it the nickname "Little England." Victoria Park, laid out in the late 19th century, and Hakgala Botanical Garden, founded in 1861 originally to experiment with growing cinchona (the source of quinine) and later other temperate plants, both date from this colonial period. The surrounding highlands were first planted with coffee, but when a fungal blight devastated Ceylon's coffee industry in the 1870s, planters — most famously the Scotsman James Taylor, who established the island's first commercial tea estate at nearby Loolecondera in 1867 — replaced it with tea. That switch built the foundation of Sri Lanka's modern tea industry, which remains centred on this region today.
