East Coast
Nilaveli
White sand and the reef just offshore.
Why Visit
One of Sri Lanka's least crowded beach stretches, paired with easy access to Pigeon Island's shallow, accessible snorkelling.
A long, quiet white-sand beach on the northeast coast, a short boat ride from the coral reef and marine life of Pigeon Island National Park.
History
Nilaveli's history is closely tied to nearby Trincomalee, a few kilometres south, which has served as a major natural harbour for over a thousand years. Nilaveli itself stayed a quiet fishing beach for most of that time, its character shaped more by the sea than by any fort or monument of its own. Its position beside Pigeon Island — declared a national park in 2003 to protect the coral reef just offshore — turned it into a base for reef tourism from the 2000s onward, alongside a slow but steady growth in beachfront hotels drawn by its calmer, less developed stretch of coast compared to the south.
