History

Earlier temples on or near this site were destroyed by Portuguese colonizers in the 16th and 17th centuries as part of a broader campaign against non-Christian religious practice in the areas they controlled, with temple lands in some cases handed to Catholic missions. The current temple was rebuilt in 1734, once Dutch rule (which was more tolerant of Hindu worship than the Portuguese had been, though still restrictive) allowed reconstruction, and it has since grown into the most important Hindu temple in northern Sri Lanka, dedicated to Murugan (also known as Skanda), the god of war and victory widely worshipped in Tamil Hindu tradition. Its annual festival, tracing a tradition of many generations, runs for around 25 days and builds to a large chariot procession in which the deity's image is drawn through the streets, drawing devotees from across the island and the Tamil diaspora abroad.
