North
Mullaitivu
A quiet stretch of the northeastern coast.
Why Visit
For travellers looking for an undeveloped, uncrowded coastline well off the established tourist routes.
A coastal district on the northeastern shoreline, among the least developed stretches of coast on the island.
History
Before the civil war, Mullaitivu district was a quiet fishing and farming area on the northeastern coast, its lagoons and paddies supporting small coastal communities much as they had for generations. The district was significantly affected by the conflict, including its final stages in 2009, and the years since have been ones of steady, gradual rebuilding — resettlement, demining and the slow return of infrastructure and services to an area that saw prolonged disruption. Today the coastline is quiet, sparsely populated and largely undeveloped rather than a site of active memorial tourism; most visitors come for the unspoiled beaches, lagoons and birdlife rather than for the district's recent history, and fishing remains a central part of local life along this stretch of coast.
