Batticaloa

A city built around a lagoon.

Why Visit

A working lagoon city rather than a beach resort — Batticaloa's identity is tied to its water, its fishing fleet and its own distinct Tamil culture and cuisine.

A city on Sri Lanka's east coast built around a large, calm lagoon, with a Dutch-era fort, a strong Tamil cultural identity and a slower pace than the busier coastal towns further south.

History

Batticaloa's natural lagoon and access to the sea made it a contested port through the colonial era: the Portuguese built the first fort here in the early 17th century, and the Dutch captured and rebuilt it in 1638, making Batticaloa Fort one of the earliest Dutch fortifications on the island, predating their larger works at Galle. The British later took control along with the rest of Dutch Ceylon in 1796. The town is also known locally for the old story of its "singing fish" — a sound said to rise from the lagoon on still nights, long attributed to fish or other lagoon life, though never definitively explained. Batticaloa's Tamil community and its lagoon-centred way of life have remained central to the town's identity throughout.
